Recognizing and Responding to Developmentally Appropriate and Inappropriate Sexual Behaviors of Children

Abstract

The article utilizes child development literature to offer guidance in understanding developmentally appropriate and inappropriate sexual behaviors in children. This is done for the following age ranges: children below the age of four, children four to six years of age, children seven to twelve years old, and adolescents and teenagers. The article outlines potential causes for inappropriate sexual behavior in children and provides an overview of evidence-based treatment options. Guidelines for reuniting siblings when there has been sexual abuse are also provided.
