Language: Idolatry and Evangelism

Authors

  • Mary Streufert Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Abstract

This article works from the thesis that language can be idolatrous and evangelical. To demonstrate that androcentric language is idolatrous, the author turns to Scripture and Luther. To demonstrate that expansive language is evangelical, the author turns to linguistic theory, Scripture, and Luther. The author concludes that expansive language is at the heart of what it means to be Lutheran: to be evangelical so that the gospel is heard.
