The Intersectionality of Race, Politics, and the Legal Justice System

Using Theological and Historical Frameworks to Interpret the #BlackLivesMatter Movement

Abstract

In the United States, multiple generations of Black people have had to endure mistreatment under the law due to their skin color. This racialized abuse of “legitimate” power has resulted in Black people being victims of unfair labor practices, lack of educational resources, police brutality, and unequal access to health care. Recently, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has brought police abuse of power and a biased judicial system to the political forefront. Therefore, this article discusses race, politics, and the judicial system through an intersectional methodology to show how the #BlackLivesMatter movement seeks to restore the humanity of Black lives.
